The power of Social Media has become huge. It’s hard to find anybody who wouldn’t at least have a Facebook, LinkedIn and/or Twitter account. Even Mr Happee has a Facebook account!
And so do the majority of your colleagues, business partners, ex-clients, clients and people you’ve always wanted to connect to but didn’t know how to approach them. Why wouldn’t you take the advantage of the increasing power of social media and use it for connecting to those who are important to you?
You can increase your visibility on the market or network with your potential alliance partners… or monitor your competitors’ activities… You just have to choose the social media channel that best suits your needs and goals.
Facebook – powerful and excellent for B2C
• Facebook has more than 750 million active users.
• The community has grown by 250 million users over the last year.
• 50% of Facebook active users log on to Facebook in any given day
• The average user has 130 friends and he/she is connected to 80 community pages, groups, events and business pages.
• There are more than 30 billion pieces of content (web links, news stories, blog posts, notes, photo albums, etc.) shared on Facebook each month
LinkedIn – professional and B2B oriented
• As of August 4, 2011, LinkedIn operates the world’s largest professional network on the Internet with more than 120 million members in over 200 countries and territories
• LinkedIn has 47.6 million monthly unique visitors (the number has grown by 63% over the last year)
• As of June 30, LinkedIn reports that on average there are 2 new members joining the community every second
• More than 2 million companies have LinkedIn Company Pages.
Twitter – quick and easy to sync with other social media accounts
• Twitter has over 100 million active users and over 400 million monthly unique visitors
• The community has increased by 82% since January 2011 (around 45 million new users in past 8 months)
• 50 million users log in daily
• Twitter users produce an average of 230 million tweets a day (this number has increased by 110% since January 2011) = 5 billion tweets a month
YouTube – easy to share and embed into other sites
• As of June 2011, YouTube gets 3 billion views every day
• The number of views has gone up by 50% over the last year
• Over 48 hours of video are uploaded to the site each minute (100 % increase from last year)
The numbers are powerful and it looks like online communities enhance their influence by attracting new users every second. These statistics has most probably changed by few hundreds, thousands or even millions by the time I finish this sentence. Social media is a great tool for connecting exactly to those people whom we want to engage with, and there are definitely many between those 100, 120 or 750 million users on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and other platforms.
And to get the most from your social networks you often need some Wide Thinking for a Change…
